Embracing Feedback with Insights Discovery: The Colorful Approach

Embracing feedback, whether giving or receiving it, may be a delicate process. But what if we could be intentional about personalizing our feedback to make this exchange more effective and compassionate? Let’s explore how the Insights Discovery tool can guide us in giving and receiving feedback in a way that nurtures growth and understanding.

Happy Team Conversation

Before we give and receive feedback, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Ask for Permission: Start by asking, “May I give you some feedback?” This approach increases the likelihood that your feedback will be well-received and gives the recipient a heads-up before they hear it.

  • Use "I" Statements: When sharing your opinions, emotions, and assessments, use "I" language to own your statements. This helps in expressing your perspective clearly and personally.

  • Reflect on the Feedback: Consider what the feedback might reveal about you. What can you learn from it? Often, the feedback we give is something we could benefit from ourselves. Additionally, asking for feedback in return fosters an environment of trust and respect.

  • Be Open to Feedback: Listen with an open mind and view feedback as a gift. Commit to not reacting defensively, and instead, use the feedback as a tool for growth and improvement.

Here are some specific and practical strategies for doing feedback not just well but in the most effective manner using the Insights Discovery tool:

Fiery Red: Direct and Clear

People who lead with Fiery Red energy are all about action, clarity, and directness.

When giving feedback to them, focus on being straightforward and honest. This doesn’t mean being harsh; it means being clear about your observations and intentions. What suggestions do you have for them to do? What do you want to do? What decisions do you want to make?

When receiving feedback from them, listen with an open mind and appreciate the clarity. It’s an opportunity to gain specific insights and action that can help you improve.

Example:

“Your presentation had a strong start, and, it would benefit from more detailed examples. I believe this will make your points more compelling.”

Sunshine Yellow: Positive and Encouraging

People who lead with Sunshine Yellow energy radiate enthusiasm and encouragement.

When giving feedback to them, highlight strengths and express confidence in the person’s abilities.

When receiving feedback from them, soak in the positivity and let it motivate you to keep building on your strengths. Ask them for specific examples to illustrate the feedback they give so you are both clear on what to expect going forward.

Example:

“You have a natural talent for engaging your audience. If you add a few more anecdotes, I think it will make your presentations even more relatable and memorable.”

Cool Blue: Calculated and Analytical

People leading with Cool Blue energy bring calmness, thoughtfulness, and a logical approach.

When giving feedback to them, provide detailed observations and the facts of what actually happened or may happen.

When receiving feedback from them, appreciate the factual, constructive criticism. It’s a chance to refine your skills with thoughtful advice.

Example:

“I noticed that your report had excellent data, and, it could be improved with a more structured conclusion."

Earth Green: Supportive and Compassionate

People who lead with Earth Green energy are nurturing, compassionate, and supportive.

When giving feedback to them, focus on being empathetic and supportive of their feelings and sensations, ensuring the person feels valued and understood.

When receiving feedback from them, feel the support and use it as a foundation to grow. It’s a reminder that feedback is given with your best interests at heart.

Example:

“I can see how much effort you put into this project, and it shows. One thing that might help is to streamline the content a bit for clarity. I’m here if you need any help with that.”

In reality, the best thing we can do is practice channeling all these different color energies, remaining in a place of being open to growth and practicing how we receive and give feedback. It can also be very helpful to have a discussion with those you work with on the best ways they like to receive feedback. This way, you get information on how to deliver feedback effectively directly from them! Using the Insights Discovery color framework can be a good way to open up this discussion.

So next time you find yourself in a feedback situation, think about which color energies you can bring into the conversation. It might just make all the difference.
